Child Abuse Response and Evaluation Services – CARES

The goal of the original CARES Program, and the goal of CARES Northwest today, is to provide a centralized assessment center for children who may have been abused or neglected. Physical examinations and interviews are done in a comfortable environment to help the child feel relaxed and unafraid.

Our Goals

  • To minimize further trauma to child abuse victims and their families by coordinating expert evaluation services in one location.

  • To provide a high level of expertise in the medical diagnosis and treatment of abused children.

  • To provide access to needed mental health interventions, as quickly as possible. To provide recommendations for medical and psychological treatment and follow-up in cases of child abuse.

  • To provide a database for research and potential legislation on prevention and treatment of child abuse.

Our Services

  • Evaluation of Sexual Abuse, Physical Abuse & Neglect
This service provides medical examinations and documentation for victims of possible abuse, as well as recommendations for any needed medical treatment or follow-up. If appropriate, an interview is conducted with the child by a trained specialist to help determine whether abuse has occurred, as well as the specifics of the alleged abuse.

  • Mental Health Services
The staff of the Multnomah County Family Support Program provide immediate mental health services to the families and children seen at CARES Northwest. The services can include referral to community agencies, parent support groups, individual and family therapy.

  • Consultation
The staff of CARES Northwest are available for consultation with other professionals on issues of child abuse and neglect.

  • Education and Research
CARES Northwest staff are available to provide lectures and training to other professionals on issues of child abuse and neglect.

  • Volunteers
Volunteers are an important part of CARES Northwest. They offer support to children and their families during the assessment process.
